The adhesion of paint coatings:
From the mechanisms of protection against corrosion coatings of paint, good adhesion to the underlying material is obviously very desirable. The adhesion is thought to be a combination of mechanical effects, chemical and physical (the relative importance of each of these has varied somewhat over the years).These bonding effects are all based on intimate contact between the underlying material and lining up across the molecular level. Effective wetting of the material to be coated is important. Note that, with all other things being equal, a larger surface area offers more mechanical and / or chemical and / or physical anchor (bonding) sites.Mechanical interlock: "Lock and key" effect, the mechanical anchoring on rough and porous surfaces.
